Let's get this party started!

My thread on HF got deleted so for anyone interested in keeping up to date with my Soekris DAC implementation I've made this blog to post my updates on. I will also post stuff about my personal audio journey here!

  1. hi Bucket, sucks they deleted your thread. Here's the xlr jacks that get included with the pcb.. and you can see the the pcb mount area on the right end of hte pic where they go.. I'm 99% sure the dac includes balanced out. When I was talking about the usb to rs232 adapter the one that doesn't work is the TTL type.. until soekris releases the new firmware. here's the pic with the neutrik xlrs http://www.dimdim.gr/diyaudio/soekris-dam1021-sign-magnitude-r-2r-dac/ anyway I'm still interested in having you make me a dac

    1. I've been following the soekris threads for a long time, it was going to be my first diy project but I chickened out and decided not to buy the tools for the casework. the other thing I remember noting for myself was.. you can't leave the usb to rs232 adapter plugged in except when updating because it lowers the sound quality? or something? maybe I'm thinking of something else but just something to double check

    2. also I think there was something about the grounding of the mounting holes on the pcb.. like you were supposed to use non grounding standoffs? or make sure they were grounding?

    3. The board has two outputs. A single ended one, taken directly after the R-2R network, with no DC offset and no caps in series with the signal (output at J7 terminal) and a balanced one, using op-amps to convert from SE to balanced (terminals J6 & J8). The single ended output is at 1.4V RMS with a Zout of 625Ω, while the balanced output is at 4.0V RMS with a Zout of 20Ω.

    4. Hello!

I have indeed redesigned the back panel to accommodate the balanced jacks. - indeed, the same model as the one included. I think they weren't supposed to be grounding but I have to make sure. I plan to replace the stock op-amps with OPA827s in order to improve the sound but I'll have to ask Soren whether this is possible first.

  2. here's the post where soekris confirms the pcb comes with two neutrik xlr jacks.. http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/digital-line-level/267948-soekris-s-dac-implementations-4.html#post4188388
